Carlton Stansbury encourages his clients in his practice to separate emotion from logic, allowing them to make rational, goal-oriented decisions throughout the divorce process.
A founding partner of Milwaukee’s Burbach & Stansbury, he focuses his family law practice on divorce, including complex cases involving businesses or large estates.
“Managing the challenges is difficult. The key is to continually remind the party of his or her long-term goals and the best way to achieve the goals,” Stansbury said. “Sometimes, it is necessary to request the party to try to think of the problem as a math problem and divide their brain into two portions: logic and emotion.”
Having testified before the Wisconsin Supreme Court and Legislature, Stansbury advocates for treating divorce as a public health issue and devoting more resources to mental health professionals and dispute resolution professionals. He believes this approach would lead to healthier outcomes for families and reduce the adversarial nature of divorce proceedings.
