Legal All-Star – Lucas Vebber – Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty

For Lucas Vebber, a career in the law was a natural fit.

The deputy counsel at the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty, Vebber said he always had “a desire to help people. … I went to schools that emphasized being a person for others — using your skills to make the lives of others better.”

He also helps people understand the legal system, the processes that are in place and how to use the system. At WILL, he focuses on separation of powers and regulatory issues.

“What really drew me to WILL was the opportunity to work alongside some of the best legal minds around in support of a common mission that I truly believe in. It’s a real joy to come to work here every day and to be able to do what I do,” Vebber said.

Vebber said WILL sees different issues coming in almost every day.

“Oftentimes, our cases are matters of first impression in the court system. We must be able to think creatively and critically to achieve success for our clients,” he said.

At WILL, Vebber said he’s had several mentors who have helped him grow in his skills, including WILL President and General Counsel Rick Esenberg.

“Rick is a brilliant attorney and a great leader of our team. He’s generous with his time and always available to chat,” Vebber said. “Rick is a mentor and a friend and I am incredibly grateful for the confidence he has shown in me throughout my career here.”

Two WILL senior counsel attorneys — Brian McGrath and Mike Fischer — have also played a role in his development, teaching Vebber “more about the practice of law than I could ever have imagined.”
