Climate change may not be the first topic you think of when it comes to construction, but for Jessica Mederson, a partner with Stafford Rosenbaum in Madison, it plays a vital role in the industry.
“More and more people are realizing how climate change is impacting all of us. Construction is already vulnerable during weather events both during and after a project,” she said. “People worry their site might flood. Extreme heat is something we also discuss and how it relates to acute and chronic health needs.”
Mederson, who has worked in construction-related law for 12 years and has a total of 20 years of litigation experience, discusses the role climate change affects the construction industry via her podcast titled “Adapt: Climate Change and the Built Environment,” articles and presentations.
“I’m really passionate about construction law and how it intersects with climate change and I how I can help clients address these concerns,” she said. “One aspect I like about being a lawyer is that I can keep expanding my knowledge and doing new things.”
Mederson was instrumental in forming and leading a women’s affinity group at Stafford Rosenbaum.
“I benefited a lot from the women who mentored me” and wanted to help pass along what she learned, she said.
She also actively participates in the firm’s career development program, helping associates advance in their work and the firm.
James Egle, a partner in Stafford Rosenbaum’s office, said Mederson takes time outside of her practice to participate in causes and events that are important to people with whom she works and interacts.
“(Mederson) stands out because she’s a well-balanced person who cares about the greater good, the firm she leads, the work she does and all of the people involved in her success story,” he said.
