The way that law helps shape and define society has always fascinated Heidi Furlong.
“I am the classic case of a philosophy major turned lawyer,” she said.
Furlong is a partner at Foley & Lardner, where she leads the Debt Finance Group. Furlong focuses her practice on the representation of both public and private companies in connection with credit facilities and other treasury-related needs.
She also has experience representing private equity sponsors in the financing of portfolio companies, representing banks and other financial institutions in making loans and assisting companies in working out troubled loans.
“One of the biggest challenges in my line of work, which is also one of the best things about it, is that both the law and the businesses of our clients are constantly evolving,” Furlong said. “There is always something new to be learned or a new problem to be tackled to add value for our clients and their businesses.”
Furlong is as passionate about giving back to the community as she is about her work at Foley, said her colleague, Devin Sutherland. She has long been a volunteer for the Women’s Fund of Greater Milwaukee, including previous service as a board member. She currently serves as a member of the programming committee.
For young people considering a career in the legal industry, Furlong said it’s important to think about what you’re passionate about “and then focus on an area of law that meshes with your interests. The legal profession can be challenging and time-consuming, which are actually good qualities in a career if you love what you are doing.”
Outside of work, Furlong enjoys spending time with her two children, which — as she puts it — “means a whole lot of soccer, figure skating and lately college planning.
“I also love to travel and to cook, and I aspire to be a gardener.”
