May Lee’s goal is to continue to spread hope not to young attorneys but to members of the community. Her story of resilience and determination began when her family fled a third-world country, leaving behind genocide and war.

After a career in higher education and serving as an assistant district attorney, Lee is the owner and founder of Lee Law, a growing private practice serving Milwaukee criminal defense clients.

“Giving people hope and belief in themselves that if someone can make it, that the people we often represent in the inner city, can have hope and believe that — we can make a difference,” Lee said.

Now with a team of three attorneys, in addition to herself, and a paralegal, Lee continues to see excitement in the next generation of woman-led firms and woman-owned businesses.

“I would say — and this sounds cliché — but it really is about just being able to shape and provide a role model for others,” Lee said. “Beyond that, I had a client recently, and he said I specifically chose you because you’re a female, and not only that, you’re a minority in a male-dominated field. Owning your own business, you have to overcome obstacles to get where you are and that tells me you work hard.”

The Wisconsin Law Journal honored Lee, alongside 23 other attorneys, with the Women in the Law award.
