Joseph Heino brings decades of legal experience backed by a foundation in electrical engineering. Heino is a partner at Amundsen Davis, where he’s considered the firm’s most transactional intellectual property lawyer.
He focuses a majority of his practice on licensing and collaboration agreements, helping clients protect, manage and enforce their IP across patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. Heino describes his approach to IP law as building fences.
“When I speak in this area, I always tell people that there’s intellectual property and there’s real property. And they’re different in that real property is tangible whereas intellectual property is intangible, but we’re able to build fences around both,” Heino said. “The analogy is if you own a piece of real estate, you can build a tangible fence around it to keep people off of it, same with IP, you create an intangible fence around that property.”
He emphasizes a proactive approach to protecting clients’ IP assets while maintaining objectivity, candidly advising when pursuing a course of action may not be in their best interest, a quality that has earned him a reputation as a trusted advisor.
