Can you hear me now?

As someone who detests cell phones – never sent a text message, never will – it was interesting to see a judge take a stand against providers.

In a preliminary ruling, California Superior Court Judge Bonnie Sabraw invalidated early termination fees charged by Sprint Nextel, which could be responsible for $18.2 million in restitution for about 2 million state cell phone customers.

While the decision is the first of its kind, it hopefully won’t be the last.

Speaking from experience, cell phone contracts are harder to maneuver out of than a deflating inner tube, so any judicial assistance is greatly appreciated.

A two- or three-year contract can feel like an eternity when service is routinely spotty, but what incentive is there for a provider to keep you happy once they’ve got you locked in unless you are willing to pay upwards of $200 to opt out.

No doubt attorneys across and nation will be connecting with potential clients for additional suits against providers.

Ironically, many lawyers will probably talk on phones issued by the very same providers their clients plan to sue.
