“I remember, many years ago, Judge Michael Guolee of Milwaukee County saying in chambers about a case, ‘do you want a divorce or do you want a fight?’ He was acknowledging that some people just want to fight,” Van Kirk said. “My advice for individuals is to recognize that, while they can fight or litigate when necessary, often they want a divorce and to finalize matters on their own terms.”
When children are involved, Van Kirk encourages parents to take the high road as they will continue to share important life events even after the divorce. Her focus on cooperation between parents helps ensure the best possible outcomes for children post-divorce.
