A nice option for receiving free email updates when items are filed with the SEC is SECFilings.com. The site is offered by Accelerize New Media. It is a clean, easy to use, interface that provides a wealth of information. Researchers need to register to receive alerts, but it is a quick process.
Once registered, users can set up alerts based on a particular company (e.g. Harley Davidson), a specific industry (e.g. Paper & Paper Products), or for an individual. An email will be sent whenever a document meeting your criteria is filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The site also offers a general search option and a news feed.
The site provides some suggestions for usage:
Track insider transactions through Form 4 filings
Track hedge fund trades through Schedule 13D filings
Read annual reports through Form 10-K filings
Discover spin-off opportunities through Form 10-12b filings
