Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the military. In researching these brave individuals, the government provides an extensive amount of information. Below are just a few possible stops for the researcher.

The VA maintains 131 national cemeteries in 39 states and Puerto Rico. Many states also have veteran cemeteries. To locate burial locations of veterans, the National Gravesite Locator is available. It “includes burial records from many sources. These sources provide varied data; some searches may contain less information than others. Information on veterans buried in private cemeteries was collected for the purpose of furnishing government grave markers, and we do not have information available for burials prior to 1997.”

The National Archives also houses important information when researching those who served in the military. A summary of their military resources can be found here. Arlington National Cemetery’s website is another stop for historical information.
