Given that United States Supreme Court hopeful Sonia Sotomayor’s appointment to the bench would be historic and the fact that her nomination has been cloaked in controversy, it is no surprise that her four-day confirmation hearings have been covered from the inside out.
It has been hard to avoid newsy nuggets on the Web, updated seemingly by the minute as a companion to streaming video of Sotomayor’s ongoing Q&A session with Senators.
While Justice Samuel A. Alito took the bench only a few years ago, Sotomayor’s nomination by President Obama and subsequent confirmation hearing comes at the pinnacle of the online networking explosion.
Who would have ever expected to read the phrase “Tweet about Sonia Sotomayor now!”
At a time when surveys (PDF) show that the majority of Americans struggle to name any of the nine U.S. justices, let alone one of our seven state ones, the publicity surrounding Sotomayor’s selection may, at least temporarily, increase interest in the judiciary.
