ImageThe field of candidates to succeed U.S. District Judge John Shabaz has gone from 16 to 5 to one. This week, President Bush nominated Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge J. Mac Davis to the Western District of Wisconsin bench.

Now it’s up to the U.S. Senate to decide whether to confirm the 3rd District’s chief judge.

Davis was first elected to the circuit court in 1990. His current term expires next year. Prior to becoming a judge, he practiced for 14 years and served seven years as a state senator.

Davis was one of five candidates that U.S. Sens. Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold, and U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner forwarded to the White House. The other finalists were Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Michael Brennan, Madison attorney Stephen Meyer, U.S. Attorney Erik Peterson and Eau Claire County Circuit Court Judge Lisa Stark.

Kohl and Feingold, both Democrats, and Sensenbrenner, a Republican, reduced the field of candidates from the list of 16 they received from the bipartisan Federal Nominating Commission.
