MPD: Milwaukee homicides down nearly 40 percent compared to last year

On Tuesday morning Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) officials said homicides are down 39 percent compared to last year.

According MPD, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, human trafficking, burglary, and theft are also down, along with several other categories.

Overall total violent crime in Milwaukee is down 11 percent since list year.

MPD’s stats released on April 16, do not factor in federally reported hate crimes or the spike in crime that Milwaukee typically sees during Summer months.

As previously reported by the Wisconsin Law Journal, hate crimes in Wisconsin based on race or religion have nearly tripled in the past three years.

Across the state in Illinois, hate crimes have seen an even larger increase.

ABC7 reported in January of 2024, in the city of Chicago, vehicle theft and attempted theft in the past 12 months has reached the highest level ever recorded in the city, according to Chicago police data.
