Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers announced Tuesday he is seeking applicants for Rusk County District Attorney. The appointment will fill a vacancy being created by District Attorney Ellen Anderson’s resignation, effective Feb. 9, 2024. The new district attorney will serve for the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2025.

As previously reported by the Wisconsin Law Journal in March of 2023, Wisconsin was on brink of constitutional crisis as courts faced an unprecedented District Attorney and public defender shortage.

In May of 2023, a pay increase for Assistant District Attorneys and Public Defenders passed Wisconsin’s Budget Committee.

In December of 2023, the Wisconsin Law Journal honored Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney, with the unsung hero award.

Toney who serves as President of the Wisconsin District Attorneys Association, was instrumental in ending Wisconsin’s constitutional crisis.

He worked with elected officials across both political aisles to end Wisconsin’s constitutional crisis.

The State Bar of Wisconsin reported as of January 2023, there were 48 assistant district attorney vacancies throughout the state. That number has since decreased to 44.5 vacancies, according Wisconsin Department of Administration data as of January 12, 2024.

To apply for the Rusk County District Attorney vacancy, please email a completed application form and supporting materials to [email protected]. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 31, 2024.
