When Jennifer Tate was in college, a friend of hers was doing a mock trial and asked Tate to help play a witness in the competition.

It was a role that led her to pursue a career in law.

“After that, it was pretty much a done deal,” said Tate, an associate attorney at Jones Law Firm. “I loved the mock trial competitions and I finally felt like I could combine both my love of theater, public speaking and performance (with) logic, reason and argument.”

Tate specializes in criminal defense, practicing mostly in Milwaukee but also in surrounding counties. She has prosecuted and defended people in all types of criminal cases, including homicides, sexual assaults, drug cases and child-abuse matters.

“Over the course of her career, Jennifer has shown herself to be a zealous and compassionate attorney, resulting in being highly respected and formidable advocate,” said Russell Jones, who founded the firm in 2008. “Jennifer has conducted dozes of trials, resulting in several favorable verdicts. She possesses highly developed trial skills and is most comfortable advocating for clients in front of juries. Since joining Jones Law Firm, Jennifer has become a valuable asset to the firm.”

Tate said one of the hardest parts of her job is the defense work. It entails “helping that client understand not only the facts of the case, but how the facts intersect with the law. Seeing a client put the pieces together is really rewarding and having a client effectively assist in his or her defense is incredibly rewarding.”

Before working in Wisconsin, Tate worked in the St. Louis area as a prosecutor and as a civil defense attorney for a private firm.

“I love being a criminal attorney,” she said. “I don’t think there is any area of the law more important, challenging or rewarding.”
