von Briesen attorney appointed leader association of school lawyers

von Briesen & Roper’s Christine Hamiel has been appointed president of the Wisconsin School Attorneys Association.

Hamiel, who works in the firm’s Milwaukee office, is a shareholder and leader of the School Law Section at von Briesen.

She was appointed president at the Feb. 20 meeting of the association, whose more than 100 members serve as legal counsel for members of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards.

Foley announces leadership changes

Foley & Lardner recently announced the following changes in the leadership of its intellectual property department and litigation practice group:

Partner and Milwaukee attorney Jeff Costakos has been named chairman of the firm’s IP Litigation Practice Group.

Partner and Milwaukee attorney Kadie Jelenchick has been named vice chairperson of the firm’s IP Litigation Practice Group.

Partner Dave Luettgen has been named chairman of the IP Department in the firm’s Milwaukee office.

von Briesen, Godfrey attorneys win award

Lawyers from von Briesen & Roper and Godfrey & Kahn recently won awards from the Wisconsin School Attorneys Association.

The association named Godfrey’s Jon Anderson and von Briesen’s Christy Brooks as the 2019 George Tipler Award recipients for Distinguished Service in School Law.

The award, which the association’s board established in 1994, recognizes members of the legal profession who have dedicated their careers to helping Wisconsin schools.

Anderson is a shareholder at Godfrey and works in the firm’s Madison office.

Brooks is a shareholder at von Briesen & Roper’s Milwaukee office, where she advises school districts on state and federal laws. She previously served as president of the Wisconsin School Attorneys Association.

2 DeWitt litigators included in list of top trial lawyers

DeWitt recently announced that the National Trial Lawyers Association has included litigators Howard Schoenfeld and David Schwartz in its Top 100 Trial Lawyers in Wisconsin list.

Schoenfeld, who has been an NTLA member for 13 years, has practiced for more than 30 years in both state and federal courts. He frequently represents individuals, companies, lawyers and municipalities in various litigation matters.

Schwartz, who has been an NTLA member for six years, is a litigator with nearly 40 years of experience. He specializes in personal injury, medical negligence, worker’s compensation and general civil litigation.

Hupy and Abraham voted ‘Best of Milwaukee’

Hupy and Abraham was recently voted “Best Personal Injury” law firm for the eighth straight year as part of the Shepherd Express’ “Best of Milwaukee” survey.

The Shepherd had readers vote on the best vendors and companies, then celebrated them at an event on Jan. 22 at the Potawatomi Hotel in Milwaukee.

Jackson Lewis’ Milwaukee office gets new managing principal

Jackson Lewis recently announced that Brian Chistensen has been appointed managing principal of the firm’s Milwaukee office.

Christensen, a labor attorney, joins Jackson Lewis’ Milwaukee office from the firm’s Kansas City-area locations, where he was the office managing principal since 2014.

Hupy and Abraham sponsors exhibit for anniversary

Milwaukee-based Hupy and Abraham recently announced that it has partnered with the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame to sponsor a new exhibit at Discovery World in Milwaukee.

The exhibit, “Get in the Game,” lets attendees learn more about Wisconsin’s athletes and their achievements.

Part of the exhibit will also feature photos of firm employees at community, volunteer and charity events, as well as information about Hupy and Abraham’s corporate philanthropy and civic engagement.

The “Get in the Game” exhibit will run until April 30.

Former Humana executive joins Michael Best Strategies

Consulting firm Michael Best Strategies recently announced that it has hired former Humana executive Lisa Wills to their Wisconsin office.

As a principal at Michael Best Strategies, she works with clients to create health care solutions.

Wills has 25 years of top-level experience in startup companies and large corporations. She led commercial business strategies for Humana in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

DeWitt attorney earns award

DeWitt recently announced that Lexology recognized partner Christopher Scherer in its 2019 Client Choice Awards-Excellence in Client Service.

Scherer, who works in DeWitt’s Brookfield office, also helps lead the firm’s Intellectual Property Group.

The award, which surveyed senior corporate counsel, focuses on practitioners who add value to clients’ businesses beyond others in the market. Scherer was one of 269 international winners and 160 winners in the U.S. and Canada.

MWH Law Group attorney gets props from bar association

The National Bar Association Commercial Law Section recently recognized a MWH Law Group attorney.

The NBA’s section awarded attorney Grady Crosby with the Jean-Marie Sylla, Jr. Legacy Award, which recognizes a rising attorney with one to four years of experience and is committed to serving the NBA and legal profession.

Crosby, who earned his law degree from Marquette University Law School in 2018, practices labor and employment law, commercial law and premises liability litigation. He joined the MWH Law Group as an associate in June.
