Jessica J. Shrestha didn’t plan to be an attorney.

After graduating from college, she worked at a bank, focusing on procedures and regulations.

“It was in reading up on all that stuff that I realized how interesting it was and how much I enjoyed it,” said Shrestha, now an associate with Wheeler, Van Sickle & Anderson SC, Madison. “That got me really thinking about law school.

“I really enjoy researching and thinking through complex issues.”

Research and strategy play prominent roles in Shrestha’s practice of litigation and real property law. For instance, she helped prepare witnesses and testimony and provided analysis for a monthlong case on stray voltage in Iowa.

Shrestha said she is captivated by stray-voltage cases.

“It’s a very complex issue,” she said, “and you have a lot of experts and there are so many records to go through.”

Stuart Mondschein, a shareholder with Wheeler, Van Sickle & Anderson, said he has noticed the quality of Shrestha’s work.

“Jessica is smart, very hard-working and is willing to undertake responsibility in a way that exceeds many of the young lawyers I have had the chance to work with in my over 30 years of practice,” Mondschein said. “Jessica demonstrated great legal skills as well as focus and fortitude in challenging times, and her work was a great part of our success.”

Research plays an integral role in Shrestha’s other interest, real property law.

“I find it fascinating,” she said. “You do a lot of research, and I’ve looked back at cases from the 1800s. It’s interesting to see what happened to a piece of land over the past 100 years or longer.”

In 2010, Shrestha put her property law knowledge on paper in a comprehensive review of adverse possession.

“That has become a go-to resource for lawyers with adverse-possession issues,” Mondschein said. “I worked with Jessica on litigation in this subject area, and it is clear that there are but a handful of attorneys in Wisconsin with her knowledge and skill in this area.”

Shrestha said she is thankful she has had the opportunity to follow her passions, particularly when it comes to real property law.

“Not a lot of attorneys are in this area,” she said, “so I’m glad to be making my mark and happy that there’s a firm behind me that supports my interests.”
