Program Operations Manual System

The Social Security Administration’s Program Operations Manual is a “primary source of information used by Social Security employees to process claims for Social Security benefits.” The public online version varies slightly from the SSA’s version. The public version lacks instructions for the data entry of information and any “sensitive content.”

The manual has a very detailed table of contents to allow users to browse the material. The user begins with a basic table of contents, but drilling down produces an extensive list of subsections. Once the appropriate section is located, selecting the “next” and “previous” page commands allows researchers to use the online version like a book. The site also supports a basic search engine.
