The Protect Illinois Communities Act, Pub. Act 102-1116, effective January 2023, along with three municipal laws, govern the possession of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
Second Amendment-The Protect Illinois Communities Act
The Second Amendment to the Constitution recognizes an individual right to “keep and bear Arms.” in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decisions in District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008); McDonald v. City of Chicago, 561 U.S. 742 (2010); Caetano v. Massachusetts, 577 U.S. 411 (2016) (per curiam); and New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen, 142 S. Ct. 2111 (2022).
Disciplinary Proceedings
This is a reciprocal discipline matter. On June 12, 2023, the Office of Lawyer Regulation (OLR) filed a complaint and motion pursuant to Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 22.22, requesting this court suspend Attorney Felipe N. Gomez's license to practice law in Wisconsin for a period of three years, as discipline reciprocal to that imposed by the Supreme Court of Illinois.
