Milwaukee school board sues ex-member for overpayment

The Milwaukee Board of School Directors is suing Aisha Carr to get back more than $5,000 it mistakenly paid her after she stepped down from the school board.

Prosecutors filed multiple charges against Carr in April 2024 after an investigation that was conducted during her time on the board.

She served on the board from 2021 until May 2, 2024, the day she abruptly resigned.

The board of directors says in a complaint, filed Aug. 7 in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, that it mistakenly paid her three times after she quit the board — on May 24, 2024, June 21, 2024, and July 19, 2024 — totaling $5,122.71.

The board is asking for a judgment to get the money back.

“The defendant has been unjustly enriched by accepting the overpayment,” Milwaukee attorney Joseph Johnson, who represents the board, wrote in the complaint.

Attempts to reach Carr were unsuccessful.

Prosecutors filed multiple charges against Carr in April 2024 after an investigation that was conducted during her time on the board.

She served on the board, from 2021 until May 2024, when she stepped down.

Investigators uncovered irregularities that, according to prosecutors, showed Carr filed fraudulent campaign finance reports and misappropriated campaign funds from it for her personal use.

Carr also was charged in September with omitting “thousands of dollars of income from her application” for the food assistance program FoodShare in order to receive the public funds.

As a result of the misreported income, she received $2,808 in FoodShare benefits between June and December 2023 that she otherwise would not have been eligible for, the complaint alleged.

Carr pleaded guilty in December to a felony campaign finance reporting violation and was sentenced to 18 months of probation.

A judge also ordered Carr to pay $2,808 in restitution to the state Department of Health Services as a condition of her probation.

As part of the agreement, prosecutors dropped another 11 campaign-related charges she faced in the matter, along with a separate case accusing her of food stamp fraud.
