As an employment-based immigration attorney, Grant Sovern of Quarles & Brady meets people from all over the world.

Sovern works with businesses, institutions and organizations to help their new hires obtain green cards and visas so they can stay and work in the United States.

“I get to talk to people from around the world and hear their amazing stories. It’s a very interesting and fascinating practice,” he said.

Sovern’s clients are usually looking for highly trained, specialized employees in fields where there are not many candidates.

“Many times, these are graduate students who are already in the United States and are super qualified for these roles, whether it’s a STEM researcher or a family medicine physician for a small town up north,” he said.

“If this is a job where you have many candidates, you would not go through the hassle of hiring an attorney to help your potential employee get the paperwork they need to work here.”

Since it is a specialized field, Sovern works with employers from throughout the country to help their workers receive their H1-B visas. He also does pro bono work helping refugees gain their green cards.

“It’s rewarding to help community members like that,” he said.
