Ozaukee inmate found dead identified

Nelson J. Torres Morales has been identified as the 36-year-old male from Milwaukee who was found dead in a Port Washington, Wis. holding cell over the weekend.

Authorities said Monday Morales was arrested by the Mequon Police Department for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Felony Possession of Narcotic Drugs, Felony Bail Jumping and an out-of-county warrant.

As previously reported by the Wisconsin Law Journal, Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate at the Ozaukee County jail on June 1, according to authorities, who noted Ozaukee County’s policy requires an outside agency to investigate.

According to Ozaukee County Sheriff officials at or around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Morales, an inmate at the Ozaukee County Jail was found deceased in a holding cell.

Morales had been in custody since May 30, 2024.

“The investigation is active and ongoing,” officials added.
