A Federal Judge in Chicago put a law prohibiting felons from owning firearms in legal limbo, reports Chicago Tribune, noting several other judges have ruled similarly as of late.
According to Chicago Tribune, the implications are widespread as hundreds of defendants in Chicago have felon-firearm cases pending.
Recently the Biden administration argued in its petition that reversing the ban “opened the courthouse doors to an untold number of future challenges by other felons.”
Presently there are 600 similar cases in Chicago filed by the U.S. attorney’s office over the past five years where investigations by Chicago police and other local law enforcement are later removed to U.S. District Court, Tribune noted.
At least 50 people have been charged in 2023 alone with violating the felon-with-firearm ban, court records show, according to Chicago Tribue’s report.
