A new addition to the Waukesha County courthouse is nearing completion.
The county’s June newsletter included these photos from inside the new four-story addition to the courthouse. The new part of the building is on the site of an unused former jail that’s close to the current county jail.
The photos show one of the eight new courtrooms that will be in the addition, along with new security features. The courtrooms will have three-way separation to allow sheriff’s deputies to bring inmates directly to courtrooms, eliminating the need to use public spaces to escort inmates.
Improving safety for residents and accommodating the county’s growing population are goals of the 62,000-square-foot expansion, according to Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow. He said construction on the addition is ahead of schedule and under budget. It should be complete later this year.
The county will start phase two of the project after the addition is finished. The newsletter said offices in the existing courthouse will move to the new structure as construction crews update the building, which was built in 1959. Those renovations will start in 2022. The project is expected to be complete in 2025. Follow @WLJReporter
