RACINE, Wis. (AP) — Bond is set at $5 million for a man charged with fatally shooting a Racine police officer who was trying to stop a robbery.

Twenty-six-year-old Dalquavis Ward of Milwaukee made his initial court appearance Monday by video conference from Racine County Jail.

Ward is charged with three felonies in the death last month of Officer John Hetland — first-degree intentional homicide, armed robbery and possessing a gun as a felon.

Hetland was off-duty when he was fatally shot June 17 when he tried to intervene in a robbery at Teezers Bar and Grill.

Ward was released from federal prison four days before Hetland was shot. According to court documents, DNA taken from Hetland’s clothing and the doorknob of the bar’s rear entrance matched Ward’s.

Ward is due back in court July 17.
