Judge orders homicide defendant to take medication

Listen to this articleMADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Dane County judge has ordered a defendant accused of fatally stabbing a man from whom he was renting a room to start taking medication to improve his competency for court proceedings.
Fifty-year-old Ted Bruno is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the November 2017 death of Kim Gaida at his Stoughton home. Bruno has been found incompetent to stand trial. He is being held at the Mendota Mental Health Institute.
The State Journal reports Mendota psychologist Ana Garcia testified by phone Monday that Bruno has delusions and disorganized thinking and with medication is likely to show improvement.
Defense attorney Eric Schulenburg says the state had not reached the threshold for forcing a criminal defendant to take medication, but the judge rejected that argument.
