BONIFAY, Fla. (AP) — The clerk of courts in a Florida Panhandle county has been arrested and charged with official misconduct and money laundering.

After an audit in January that prompted an investigation, 38-year-old Kyle Hudson was arrested Tuesday night, according to a news releases from Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger.

The agency found that there was a significant increase in travel expenses submitted by Hudson, starting in late 2017. Auditors were concerned that some of the charges might be fraudulent.

The investigation showed Hudson submitted travel vouchers for several conferences and meetings that he either didn’t attend or that didn’t exist. The agency said he defrauded the taxpayers of Holmes County of more than $6,000.

Hudson was booked into jail. Jail records don’t list a lawyer for him.
