NEW YORK (AP) — A New York federal judge has criticized U.S. government lawyers for seeking relief from him that they failed to get from the U.S. Supreme Court in a dispute over adding a censorship question to the 2020 census.
Judge Jesse Furman made critical remarks at a Wednesday hearing as he withheld immediately ruling on the government’s request to postpone a Nov. 5 trial on the subject.
The Supreme Court earlier this week blocked the scheduled deposition of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross but permitted other evidence gathering to proceed.
Furman set the trial date after over a dozen states and big cities, among others, sued, saying the citizenship question will discourage immigrants from participating and dilute political representation and federal dollars for states that tend to vote Democratic.
