DETROIT (AP) — A jury in Wayne County, Michigan, has awarded $135 million verdict in a lawsuit over a botched spinal surgery on a 10-year-old girl.
Hardware caused pain and further injury for Faith DeGrand of Wyandotte, said lawyer Geoffrey Fieger. In addition to other health problems, DeGrand, now 17, permanently lost control of her of bowel movements and bladder.
DeGrand was a patient at Children’s Hospital of Michigan at Detroit Medical Center. DMC hasn’t commented. The hospital contended the girl’s health was adversely affected by a blood clot, according to Fieger.
