The owner of a Polk County law firm was one of 17 female business leaders recently recognized by Gov. Scott Walker.

Walker announced Wednesday that Kathleen Gionis, owner of St. Croix Falls-based Gionis & Murtaugh Law Office, received a Pioneer Award, which honors the owners of majority women-owned Wisconsin businesses that have operated for 25 years or more.

Gionis, who earned her law degree from St. Paul.-based Hamline University School of Law in 1980, practices criminal defense and family law, and was the first woman attorney in Polk County, according to her firm’s website.

The award is part of the governor’s Trailblazer Awards for Women in Business program. Walker recognized recipients at a ceremony Wednesday at the state Capitol.
