MILWAUKEE — Republican U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman sparked a social media fight by telling a Milwaukee TV station that Wisconsin’s newly enacted voter ID law will help the GOP’s eventual nominee win the White House.
WTMJ-TV reports Wednesday that a video link to the comment had been retweeted hundreds of times with critics calling it a gaffe that shows the law was intended to suppress the Democratic vote.
The voter ID law went into effect recently after a lengthy court battle. Gov. Scott Walker signed the bill after the Republican-controlled Legislature passed it in 2011.
Supporters say it prevents fraud. Critics say it’s restrictive and disenfranchises young, poor and minority voters who support liberals and are less likely to have mandated ID.
Grothman’s office didn’t immediately return phone or email messages.
