MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal jury has convicted a Wisconsin man of making threats against President Barack Obama last summer.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports jurors on Tuesday found 55-year-old Brian Dutcher of Tomah guilty on two counts.

Dutcher was accused of writing a Facebook comment about assassinating the president on June 30. He also allegedly told a La Crosse Public Library security guard on July 1 that he planned to assassinate Obama when the president visited La Crosse the next day.

Dutcher did not testify during his trial. Sentencing is set for March 15.

Defense attorney Stephen Meyer contended that Dutcher’s comments were “obvious political exaggeration.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Pfluger told jurors that while the First Amendment guarantees free speech, Dutcher “crossed the line when he made the threats.”
