Man pleads no contest in fatal hit-run

Listen to this articleAPPLETON, Wis. (AP) — A man convicted in a fatal hit-and-run incident tells a judge in Outagamie County that while he was concerned for the bicyclist he struck, he was also scared of getting in trouble.
James Erdmann pleaded no contest Thursday in the death of Robert Joosten. The 61-year-old Little Chute man was struck and killed Nov. 9, 2013 in Appleton.
Police say the 21-year-old Poy Sippi driver was on the phone with his girlfriend when he hit Joosten.
Outagamie County Circuit Judge Mark McGinnis asked Erdmann to explain why he didn’t stop after striking the bicyclist. Erdmann says he was driving without a license and was afraid of the consequences.
Erdmann faces up to 25 years in prison. Post-Crescent Media reports prosecutors will recommend eight years in prison.
