Plea deal for Racine DA in drunken-driving crash

RACINE, Wis. (AP) — A district attorney in southeastern Wisconsin has agreed to a plea deal in a drunken-driving crash.

Racine County District Attorney Rich Chiapete agreed to plead guilty to operating while intoxicated and hit-and-run driving.

Chiapete also agreed to plead guilty to a new citation of obstructing an officer.

Attorney Philip Marry, who is representing Chiapete, tells The Journal Times his client wanted to accept responsibility.

Chiapete agreed to pay $1,205 by June 16 and have his driver’s license revoked for a year. He also will have to install an ignition interlock on his vehicles and can only drive a vehicle with an ignition interlock for a year.

Police went to Chiapete’s home Friday night after responding to an accident. Police reports say Chiapete told police he had been sleeping.
