MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The former president of a Madison Little League has pleaded not guilty to stealing more than $200,000 from the baseball organization.
According to a criminal complaint, 59-year-old Stephen Verhage told a detective that he began taking money from Kennedy Little League because his small business wasn’t doing well and that taking the money was “easy to do.”
WISC-TV reports the complaint says Verhage was the sole executor on the Kennedy bank accounts and wrote checks to himself beginning in 2005.
Verhage’s attorney says the defendant is paying restitution to Kennedy and the Little League’s insurer.
The league has 60 teams and serves about 650 children.
