FRIENDSHIP, Wis. (AP) — A 29-year-old Afghanistan veteran has reached a plea deal in the shooting death of his girlfriend.
Coleman Dybul pleaded no contest Monday to a reckless homicide charge in the March 2 shooting death of 27-year-old Toni Voss. But Daily Tribune Media reports that under the plea deal, Waushara County Circuit Judge Guy Dutcher then declared him not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
The judge ordered the Adams man back to jail until a hearing to determine whether he should be committed or treated in the community.
According to the complaint, Dybul shot Voss when she got up in the night and he mistook her for an intruder. The ex-Marine told authorities the shooting was like being back in Afghanistan, where he had to kill or be killed.
