A Fox Lake attorney who has been arrested and convicted of domestic violence and drunken driving multiple times in the past four years now faces the suspension of his law license.
Paul Belke, who was admitted to the State Bar after graduating from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1996, is on probation for bail jumping and disorderly conduct convictions. He has been arrested multiple times on similar charges, according to a complaint filed Jan. 7 by the Office of Lawyer Regulation, and has never notified the OLR of his convictions.
The complaint details the arrests, convictions and jail sentences Belke has gone through since August 2010. Many of the crimes stem from alcohol, according to the complaint, or domestic abuse toward his mother.
The OLR alleges 13 counts of misconduct, for both not reporting his convictions and engaging in conduct unbefitting an attorney. It is asking the state Supreme Court to suspend Belke’s law license for 120 days and to require him submit to an assessment for alcohol and mental health compliance and treatment.
In addition, the OLR wants the court to require Belke to be monitored by the Wisconsin Lawyer’s Assistance Program for any potential alcohol and drug abuse.
Belke did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
