MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Milwaukee Police Department is facing a growing number of lawsuits over strip searches.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports at least 20 people have filed lawsuits against the department. Many of the lawsuits involve searches conducted by former officer Michael Vagnini, who is serving 26 months in prison for illegal rectal searches and misconduct in office.
Thirty-six-year-old Joe Bohannon claims in a lawsuit filed late last month that Vagnini pulled him over in 2008 and conducted a search in which Vagnini pulled a plastic bag of cocaine from Bohannon’s anus. Bohannon says officers struck and kicked him when he tried to escape.
Another lawsuit filed last week accuses a female police officer of groping a then-16-year-old girl’s genital area during a 2011 search for drugs at her home.
