Senate passes sex offender notification bill

Listen to this articleMADISON, Wis. (AP) – The Wisconsin Legislature has passed a bill requiring registered sex offenders to notify school officials before going onto school grounds.
The Republican-sponsored bill passed the Senate on Tuesday on a voice. It now goes to Gov. Scott Walker.
Bill backers say the goal is to give schools information about the presence of sex offenders that they don’t now get. The proposal would require sex offenders to let schools know when they will be in a school building, recreation area, athletic field or other piece of property.
Exceptions are allowed for people who have children attending the school or are there to vote or other non-school events.
First-time violators would be guilty of a misdemeanor, publishable by up to nine months in jail and a $10,000 fine.
