MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Donald Steinmetz has died at age 88.

His death on Saturday was announced Wednesday by Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson.

Steinmetz was elected to the state Supreme Court in 1980 and served until 1999.

His obituary says Steinmetz, author of the high court’s decision upholding school choice, considered it to be the pinnacle of his career as a lawyer and judge. It preceded the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision upholding school choice and was cited in the opinion.

Steinmetz also served as an assistant city attorney, assistant district attorney, county judge, and circuit court judge in Milwaukee, where he was born in 1924. Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Feerick Funeral Home. A burial Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at St. Robert Catholic Church in Shorewood.
