GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – Green Bay police are getting some help in the fight against heroin addiction in Brown County.

Officials announced Tuesday that the Green Bay Police Department has been awarded a $25,000 state grant to fight heroin abuse.

The department is heading up the “Heroin Response Initiative” in Brown County.

Green Bay Police Chief Tom Molitor sayid police “can’t arrest our way out of this problem.” Instead, Molitor said the goal is to take a collaborative approach to fighting heroin addiction.

The money will be used to hire a full-time facilitator for the program.

Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said treatment, prevention and education will be “huge components” of the program.

WLUK-TV reports the grant is the first of four in Wisconsin. The other three have yet to be awarded.
