Assembly to vote on injunction proposal

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The Wisconsin Assembly is poised to pass a Republican bill that would allow attorneys to stay court injunctions blocking state laws.

The proposal would allow an attorney to stay a judge’s order blocking a state law by filing an appeal within 10 days. The stay would remain in effect until an appellate court lifted it. The measure comes after Dane County judges struck down portions of Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s law stripping public workers of their union rights and voided a Republican law mandating voters show photo identification at the polls.

Democrats say the measure amounts to an end-run around the legal system and tramples on the separation of powers between the legislative and judicial branches of government.

But Republicans control the Assembly. They’ve scheduled a vote for Thursday afternoon.
