CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (AP) — A Chippewa County jury has convicted a man of first-degree intentional homicide in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.
Jurors on Wednesday rejected William Vollbrecht’s claim that the shooting was unintentional and due to the accidental discharge of his firearm. The Chippewa Herald reports the defense had asked the jury to find Vollbrecht guilty of the lesser charge of first-degree reckless homicide.
The jury also found Vollbrecht guilty of armed burglary but not guilty of strangulation and suffocation for allegedly putting his ex-girlfriend in a chokehold after he shot Christopher Farmer at Farmer’s home last May. Vollbrecht said he put Tammy Clark in a chokehold to get police to shoot him. Instead, he surrendered when ordered.
Prosecutors said Vollbrecht shot and killed Farmer out of jealousy.
