SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) — The police chief of Superior says he believes his officers acted appropriately when they shot and wounded a man during a confrontation last month.

Chief Nicholas Alexander said Tuesday he has reviewed a report on the shooting by the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Alexander says it’s his interpretation the officers acted within department policy and state law.

Alexander says the DOJ report confirms the 19-year-old man claimed to have a firearm and threatened to shoot the officers. The officers say the man pointed a shiny metal object at them. The officers thought the object was a gun and fired, striking the man six times.

Instead of a gun, a silver wrench was found.

All three officers have returned to work. The Douglas County District Attorney’s office will determine if the use of force was justified.
