SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois has become the 30th state to adopt the Uniform Bar Exam allowing state attorneys to more easily practice in other states.

State Supreme Court Chief Justice Lloyd A. Karmeier says the exam recognizes a changing legal landscape while still maintaining high legal standards. The test has been widely adopted since it was first administered in 2011.

The two-day exam is meant to determine if a person is qualified to practice law. It consists of a lengthy multiple choice test, six essay questions on general principles of law, and two hypothetical legal assignments. A person’s score can be transferred to any state that recognizes the exam.

The test will be given for the first time in Illinois in July 2019.
