TOWN OF FRANKLIN, Wis. (AP) — A prosecutor has cleared a sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot a man in Kewaunee County this summer.
District Attorney Andrew Naze said Tuesday that Deputy Jamie Tlachac was justified in shooting 22-year-old Tyler Whitmire on Aug. 21 in the Town of Franklin.
Naze says deputies were called to a home that night on a report that Whitmire had hit a woman with a hammer. The callers said Whitmire had a knife and was asking bystanders to kill him.
Deputies arrived to find Whitmire outside with a knife in his hand. When Whitmire ran at another deputy with the knife raised over his head, Tlachac shot him.
WLUK-TV reports the woman who was hit with the hammer told agents Whitmire began acting strangely after smoking marijuana that day.
