PORTAGE, Wis. (AP) — A Subway sandwich shop employee who had an argument with a co-worker was sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting him behind the fast food restaurant in Portage.

Jordan Scott, 20, will have his first chance at supervised released in 47 years, according to the sentenced imposed Thursday evening by Columbia County Circuit Court Judge Brian Pfitzinger.

Scott pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide in March for the death of David Johnson, 22, of rural Pardeeville. The two worked together at the Subway sandwich shop. Johnson was fatally shot Sept. 5.

The fact that Scott was angry with Johnson over work issues and mad about the way Johnson had treated Scott’s girlfriend wrongly escalated to a homicide, Pfitzinger said.

“The response doesn’t match the situation,” Pfitzinger said. “I can’t even make any sense of it.”

Scott wiped away tears as he sat next to his attorney during the sentencing hearing in a packed courtroom. He apologized to Johnson’s family, his co-workers and the community for the suffering he caused, according to the Portage Daily Register.

Pfitzinger said the pain in the courtroom Thursday was “staggering,” because both families lost young men with bright futures.

The victim’s mother, Karen Johnson, testified that her family is “traumatized forever.”
