A district attorney in northwest Wisconsin is switching counties and moving up the ranks of the state judicial system.

Michael Bitney on Thursday was appointed as a judge for Branch 2 of Barron County Circuit Court, according to a news release.

Before his appointment by Gov. Scott Walker, Bitney served as district attorney in nearby Washburn County beginning in 1993. Before that, he worked at a private law firm in Spooner after receiving his law degree from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn.

Bitney is replacing Judge Timothy Doyle, who retired July 1.
