Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson became the longest-serving Wisconsin Supreme Court justice in state history Wednesday after 36 years, seven months and four days on the job.

Orsamus Cole, a state Supreme Court justice from 1855-1892, held the previous record, according to a news release. Former Gov. Patrick Lucey appointed Abrahamson in 1976 as the court’s first female justice, and she became chief justice in 1996. She has written 499 majority opinions and 405 dissents during her tenure with the court, according to the release.

Her term expires in 2019.

The calculation on the length of Abrahamson’s term was done by Madison attorney and legal historian Joseph Ranney.
