MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker is softening his stance on not filling judicial vacancies in Dane County.

Walker on Wednesday said it didn’t make sense for him to fill vacancies in Dane County after a second appointee of his was defeated by voters. But on Thursday Walker said after thinking about it more he may instead appoint retired judges or attorneys who would agree to serve until the election.

Walker said he is only taking that position for heavily Democratic Dane County, since he said the situation there is unique. He said he’s not doing it out of spite.

Walker said it appears anyone he names as a judge in Dane County will be rejected by voters and for that reason “nobody in their right mind is going to accept an appointment.”
